History

The Sound Resort, Inc. was opened by its current owners in November of 1987. The business, originally located in Conway Village, was brisk from the beginning with the emphasis on retailing audio, video, car stereo, CD’s and cassette tapes. As the market evolved to video sales, The Sound Resort changed to meet market demands.

On June 20, 2006, The Sound Resort relocated to its current location on the corner of Routes 302 and 16 in North Conway, adjacent to Lowes and Settlers Green. The new 4000 square foot, free standing building includes a garage bay to accommodate car installs, two special home theater rooms, a new car stereo room, an audio room, and a 250 square foot space dedicated to cell phone sales and service. The new store’s environment offers a dazzling display of plasma and LCD televisions and very comfortable separate rooms where the customer can get an “at home” demonstration of video and audio systems.

In November of 2006, a point-of-sale management system was installed to provide better financial information in a timelier manner. In order to keep up with the ever-changing trends and technology, employees are constantly educated so they may better serve the customers.

A fulltime home installer was hired in 2005 to help with increasing demands from customers for customized systems. The car installer was busy every day installing car systems, remote starters, and navigation systems. Cell phone sales also took off, requiring a second fulltime person in May of 2006. CD and DVD sales were discontinued due to over-saturation of the market. Plans were underway for a new, state-of-the-art, free standing store as the business had outgrown its location. What started as a small “Mom & Pop” operation in 1987 had evolved into a $2,000,000 business.
In April, 1993, the business relocated to North Conway.
Cell phone sales and service were added to the product line in 1993 with Nynex, which changed to Bell Atlantic, and again to the current product line, Verizon Wireless. Installation of customized audio/video systems began in 1994, when the “home theater” trend began. .

During the first 12 years of business, car installations were offered through a sub-contractor. As the car stereo industry increased, simple installations were performed on the premises. In 2000, The Sound Resort hired a part time car stereo installer.

In 2000, the business upgraded to accommodate the rapidly expanding video sales market. At that time, two of four competitors closed or relocated. In May of 2000, The Sound Resort moved into a newly remodeled store offering five different rooms to better display its varied product lines.
